Hello, friends! I have a new quick project to share with you today: an easy-to-sew sleep mask.
Because it has been so incredibly hot lately, I have been sleeping with my window open, which is actually nice, except at 5:30 am when it starts to get light outside. Much as I enjoy the beauty of sunrise, waking up at dawn every morning is getting a little overrated. So, I decided to make myself a cute little sleep mask. There are a ton of easy tutorials on Pinterest (and around the internet), but I found my pattern on Burdastyle – here – with instructions and a template for the mask.
First, I selected the softest, prettiest fabrics for my sleep mask. I chose a hot pink flannel for the outside and the softest pastel green bubble minky fabric for the inside lining. Next, I cut one eye mask out of each fabric, making sure to add about half an inch for seam allowance. I also cut a length of elastic that measured around the back of my head.
I love the color combination of hot pink and pale green, but this eye mask definitely still needed a little something extra; so, I decided to add some embroidery. I picked out my design and ironed it onto the fabric to make it easy to stitch. I bought this adorable design years ago from Sublime Stitching, but you can still buy it here!
Once I embroidered my adorable little birdie and stars, it was time to assemble the pieces. First, I pinned the two pieces right sides together with the elastic sandwiched in between. Then I sewed almost all the way around the edges, pulled it back right sides out and then just sewed up the little gap I left between seams. Voila! One quick, cute sleep mask made in an afternoon!
I am so pleased with my new sleep mask! I love how the embroidery design came out; plus, the super soft minky fabric on the inside is so silky against my eyelids as I drift off to dreamland. No more early mornings for me (unless I set my alarm)!
I hope you liked today’s DIY, if you make one of your own I’d love to see it! As always, thanks for reading :)
